Planning Doha travel from India? You may have a long layover, a free weekend, or a conference with a spare day, and Doha keeps coming up. Is it worth stepping out of the airport? What can you actually see in the time you have? And where do you find a proper cup of chai?

This guide answers those questions for Indian travellers. You'll find the Qatar visa for Indians basics, how to plan a Doha stopover or layover tour on the way to Europe or North America, things to do in Doha for Indians, a karak chai Doha trail through Souq Waqif and Katara, and ideas for families, couples, business trips, stopovers and students. It also covers Indian timing: Diwali, Indian school holidays and Ramadan.

Doha Travel from India: Flights and Entry

Doha travel from India is easy to plan: Qatar Airways connects Doha with many Indian cities, and the flight from Mumbai takes under four hours. Hamad International Airport is the main gateway; our Hamad International Airport guide covers the terminal in more detail.

Qatar visa for Indians: entry for Indian passport holders

Qatar visa for Indians: Indian passport holders visiting Qatar can obtain a visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 30 days, which requires  a passport valid for at least six months, a return or onward ticket, and proof of funds. Standard visa-on-arrival conditions mandate that hotel accommodations be booked exclusively through the official Discover Qatar Portal for the entire duration of the stay, whereas utilizing the official Hayya Platform offers alternative accommodation flexibility and requires a minimum passport validity of three months. For comprehensive details and official guidance, consult the Hayya Portal.

Check the current rules on Visit Qatar, the Ministry of Interior, and hayya.qa before you travel. Rules and conditions can change, and immigration officers make the final decision at the airport.

Doha Stopover from India: Layover Tours on the Way to Europe or the US

Many Indian travellers connect through Doha, so a Doha stopover is a popular way to see a new city on the way to Europe or North America. Your options depend mainly on how long you have.

Doha stopover for Indian passport holders: your options

  • Stay airside. If your layover is short, rest, eat, and shop inside the airport. You do not need a visa if you stay in the transit area.

  • Qatar Airways stopover package. If you book a multi-city ticket with Doha as a stop, the airline's stopover offer requires at least 12 hours in the city.

  • Complimentary transit accommodation. For transits of roughly 8 to 24 hours with no immediate connection, the airline may offer a hotel stay, transfers, and an entry visa. This is at Qatar Airways' discretion and arranged through Discover Qatar.

  • Doha layover tour. Discover Qatar runs guided transit tours from the airport. Indian passport holders can book one without a multi-night hotel booking. Check eligibility before you fly.

Read this before planning to leave the airport. Travellers with Indian passports do not require a multi-night hotel booking to leave the airport during a short layover if they book an official transit tour directly through Discover Qatar. However, clearing customs independently to explore the city without an official tour requires adherence to standard Visa on Arrival regulations, which mandate a minimum two-night hotel booking via the Discover Qatar portal for nationals from India and select other countries. For the latest guidelines and tour eligibility, visit Discover Qatar.

If you do have time in the city

Doha is compact, and the main sights sit close together. Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Corniche are all within a short ride of each other.

  • Build in a generous buffer. Plan to be back at the airport at least three hours before an international departure, as you would anywhere.

  • A guided half-day tour is the easiest way to see several places without managing transport yourself.

  • For a longer layover, add an evening dhow cruise or a desert safari.

Chai in Doha: the karak trail

If you love chai, Doha will feel familiar. The local favourite is karak: black tea brewed strong with milk and sugar, flavoured with cardamom and sometimes saffron or ginger. Its roots are commonly traced to South Asian households, and it is now part of Qatari daily life.

Karak vs masala chai. Both are spiced, milky, and sweet. Karak tends to be richer and sweeter, with cardamom (and often saffron) leading, whereas many home-style masala chais use a wider mix of spices and a different brew. It is typically served in small cups, often with chapati or paratha on the side.

Where to try it

  • Chapati & Karak, Katara Cultural Village. One of the best-known karak spots, listed as vegetarian-friendly and halal. Hours vary, and it has been reported to run late or around the clock most days.

  • Shay Al Shamoos, Souq Waqif. A traditional tea stall known for its karak and chapati.

  • Tea Time, Souq Waqif and Old Doha Port. An affordable takeaway chain. A cup with a few snacks has been reported at roughly QAR 15 to 25.

  • Karaki, The Pearl-Qatar. A karak shop in the marina area.

  • Chai Halib and the Karak Stop, Mall of Qatar. Including a tandoori-style karak at the latter.

For vegetarians and halal diners: karak is milk tea, and chapati, paratha and cheese or egg fillings are standard sides. Check each place for its own menu.

Business and events in Doha this season: extending your trip

Doha's autumn calendar is full: night racing, trade shows, food festivals and big concerts. Most events fill an evening or a few hours, which leaves the rest of the day free. That is the best time to see the city, so pick your event below and build an activity around it.

How to extend your stay around an

  1. Pick your extra days. One day after the event is enough for the main sights. Two or three suit a couple or a family joining you.

  2. Adjust your hotel booking. Book the event nights near the venue, then move to a leisure area such as The Pearl-Qatar or Msheireb for the extra nights, or keep one hotel for simplicity.

  3. Check how long you can stay. Confirm the permitted length of stay for your situation with the Qatar Ministry of Interior or Hayya.qa before you extend by more than a few days.

  4. Plan the extra time. See the one-day itinerary below

Fill the rest of your day

Races, concerts, and most evening events leave your days free, and the same goes for the time after a day of sessions. A half-day city tour covers Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Corniche. A desert safari with the Inland Sea makes a full day out, and a sunset dhow cruise or a karak walk through the souq suits an easy evening. Browse Doha tours and experiences.

Doha with family

Doha is easy to enjoy with children and older relatives. Distances are short, the main attractions are close together, and most of them are set up for families, with open walkways, shaded seating and plenty of places to eat. For many Indian families, who often have relatives living in Qatar, a trip also fits naturally around family visits.

Culture without the rush. The Museum of Islamic Art sits on the Corniche, and its waterfront setting makes it a comfortable first stop. Katara Cultural Village is a good second one, with galleries, an amphitheatre, a beach and restaurants in one place, so children can move around while adults take in the architecture.

An evening by the water. The Pearl-Qatar has a marina and a promenade lined with restaurants, which suits a relaxed dinner and an after-dinner walk. The Corniche is the other easy option for an early-evening stroll when the heat eases.

The big day out. A desert safari and a visit to the Inland Sea is the experience most families plan around. Dune drives, camel rides and desert scenery make it memorable, and it is worth choosing a family-friendly option with a gentler dune drive if you are travelling with young children or grandparents.

Malls as a cool break. Qatar's malls double as entertainment, with dining, cinemas and attractions alongside the shops, which makes them useful in summer. Doha Festival City has a strong family focus, Villaggio has Venetian-style interiors with an indoor canal and gondola rides, and Place Vendôme in Lusail is known for its fountain show.

Tips for travelling with family:

  • Carry water, especially if you are out with children.

  • Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon.

  • In summer, keep midday for malls and museums.

  • Eat early to avoid queues at popular spots, and check menus in advance if you need vegetarian or halal options.

Doha for couples

Things to do in Doha for Indian couples start with the waterfront. Visit Qatar promotes romantic getaways and spa breaks among its themes. Good building blocks are a sunset along the Corniche, an evening at Souq Waqif, a walk around Old Doha Port, and Katara for galleries and a beach. A sunset dhow cruise or a private tour for two rounds it out. Browse Doha Tours.

Students and visiting parents

Doha suits a student-related trip well, whether you are visiting a son or daughter studying in Qatar, coming for a campus visit, or travelling with a school or university group. The city has a large Indian community and Indian schools, so it rarely feels unfamiliar, and a few days is enough to see the highlights together.

Easy, low-cost sightseeing. Some of the best things to do in Doha are free or cheap. The Corniche is a pleasant waterfront walk, Souq Waqif is open to wander through, and a cup of karak with chapati makes a good budget stop. Katara Cultural Village and Old Doha Port are also good places to spend an evening without a big spend.

Groups and families. A shared guided tour covers the main sights in half a day and removes the need to organise transport, which helps when you are travelling with several people.

Time it with an event. If your dates allow, the Qatar International Food Festival runs from 13 to 23 January 2027 at the Lusail Stadium precinct with free entry, which makes a good day out for a family or a group.

Budget tip: living costs in Qatar are generally higher than in India, so it helps to plan meals and activities and mix paid experiences with free ones.

Best Time to Visit Doha: Weather, Diwali, Indian School Holidays and Ramadan

  • Best months: November to February. Temperatures are roughly 14°C to 25°C, which is ideal for sightseeing outdoors.

  • Summer: it often passes 40°C, so keep afternoons for malls and museums.

  • Ramadan Doha timing: the next one falls in early 2027, around February to early March (confirm the exact dates). Eating, drinking, and smoking in public are not allowed in daylight hours, and many restaurants close until the evening.

  • Indian school holidays and a Diwali Doha trip: school holidays (May to July and late December) mean pricier flights and bigger crowds. Diwali is on 8 November 2026, so early November is a popular window for a Diwali Doha trip.

  • Getting around: use the Doha Metro for the main areas, and Karwa taxis, Uber or Careem for the rest.

  • Dress and conduct: keep shoulders and knees covered in public places, including souqs and malls, and keep public displays of affection to a minimum.

  • Plugs: Qatar uses UK-style three-pin sockets (Type G) at 240V. Most Indian chargers handle the voltage, but pack a plug adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indian passport holders have generally been able to enter Qatar on a free waiver on arrival, valid for up to 30 days. The conditions matter. Reported requirements include a passport valid for at least six months (some sources say three), a return or onward ticket, proof of funds, and a hotel booking made through Discover Qatar. A Hayya e-visa is the alternative if you would rather arrange entry in advance. Confirm the current rules on Visit Qatar, the Ministry of Interior and hayya.qa before you travel.

Published guides say the waiver can be extended once, for another 30 days. If you are staying longer, check the extension process with the Ministry of Interior before you travel, and keep your return ticket and accommodation plans consistent with the dates.

It depends on your passport, ticket and how long the layover is, and published information conflicts. The options include a Qatar Airways stopover package (minimum 12 hours in the city), complimentary transit accommodation for some 8 to 24 hour transits at the airline's discretion, and guided transit tours through Discover Qatar. Entry conditions can still apply, so ask Qatar Airways or Discover Qatar with your exact itinerary before you plan to leave the airport.

November to February is the most comfortable window, with mild temperatures that suit outdoor sightseeing. Summer often passes 40°C, so plan indoor activities for the afternoons. This is also when the event calendar is busiest, so book tours early around race weekends and festivals.

Yes. Qatar has a large Indian community and Indian schools, and Doha is easy with children and older relatives. Attractions are close together, and the options include museums, the waterfront, malls, and the desert.

Qatar is generally regarded as having low everyday crime. However, regional conflict earlier this year closed Qatari airspace and suspended flights for a period, and some governments have advised caution. Operations have since resumed, but check the Indian Embassy in Doha, India's Ministry of External Affairs and your airline in the week you travel, and prefer tours with free cancellation.

Yes. Many travellers add a day or two around a conference or exhibition. Check your ticket's change rules, and confirm how long you may stay under your entry conditions. After the day's sessions, an evening dhow cruise or a half-day city tour is an easy way to use the extra time.

A Doha stopover means spending a few hours or days in the city while connecting through Hamad International Airport. Options include a Qatar Airways stopover package(minimum 12 Hours in the Day), complimentary transit accommodation for some 8- to 24-hour transits at the airline's discretion, and a Doha layover tour through Discover Qatar. Entry conditions can still apply, so confirm with Qatar Airways or Discover Qatar using the exact itinerary.
