Make Doha Your Stopover

If you're flying to Asia, Australia, Africa or the Indian Ocean via Doha, the Qatar stopover programme lets you turn the connection into a short holiday.

How the Qatar stopover programme works

  • Who it's for: Passengers on Qatar Airways and code-share tickets with a transit of 12 to 96 hours in Doha.

  • How long you can stay: Up to four nights in a four- or five-star hotel.

  • What it costs: Packages start from USD 14 per person. The price depends on the hotel, the length of stay, and the dates.

  • Package levels: Standard, premium, and luxury, which determine the hotel you can book.

  • How to book: Choose "Qatar Stopover" in the flight search panel and enter your real origin and final destination, not Doha.

  • Extras: You can add airport transfers, tours and experiences when you book.

  • Dates: Your hotel check-in date must match your arrival date in Doha.

Package prices and terms change, so confirm them on the Qatar Airways or Discover Qatar booking page. If your layover is shorter, some eligible fares also include a complimentary transit hotel, so ask Qatar Airways what applies to your ticket.

Direct flight or stopover?

A direct flight gets you there fastest. A stopover splits a long journey in two, gives you time to recover, and often costs less than booking the same hotel separately. If you're heading to Sydney, Bangkok or Cape Town, it's worth pricing both.

Stopover plans: 24, 48 and 72 hours

24 hours: Souq Waqif and the Corniche in the afternoon, then a sunset desert safari or a dhow dinner.

48 hours: Add the Museum of Islamic Art and Katara Cultural Village, plus a long dinner in Msheireb or The Pearl-Qatar.

72 hours: Add a full day outside the city, such as the Inland Sea or a beach, and a slower final morning.

The Jet Lag Recovery Package

Arriving off a long flight and want to switch off? Combine a spa hotel with a relaxed evening on the water.

Winter sun

From November to March, daytime temperatures usually sit comfortably between 20°C and 30°C, while the shoulder months of October and April bring warmer beach weather up to 35°C. With cooler, crisp evenings across the season, Doha serves as a reliable way to escape the UK winter without the exhaustion of a true long-haul flight. Simply choose a luxury hotel with private beach access via Booking.com or use GetYourGuide to secure a day pass at an upscale beach club.

F1 and sports weekends

The Formula 1 Qatar Airways Grand Prix runs from 27 to 29 November 2026 at Lusail International Circuit, and the MotoGP round is on 6 to 8 November. Staying near Lusail is convenient, but hotels fill up early.

Qatar Airways Holidays also offers F1 stopover packages of one to four nights for 27 to 29 November 2026, including a three-day T16 Grandstand ticket. If you're flying on elsewhere afterwards, that's worth comparing against a direct flight and a separate hotel.

Couples and families

Doha works for both: waterfront evenings on the Corniche and at The Pearl-Qatar for couples, and beaches, malls and family attractions for children. Look for hotels with a spa, a kids' club or a pool, depending on who's travelling.

Beaches around Doha

Most public beaches are a drive from the city centre, so plan a half or full day.

  • Katara Beach: In the city, at Katara Cultural Village. The easiest option if you're short on time.

  • Al Wakrah Beach: About 25 to 30 minutes south of Doha. Calm water, shaded seating, and playgrounds make it a good choice for families.

  • Simaisma Beach: About 30 minutes north of Doha (roughly 40 km). Shallow water and soft sand suit a relaxed family day.

  • Sealine Beach: About 40 minutes from the city, in southern Qatar, with dunes close to the shore.

  • Al Thakhira Beach: About an hour from Doha, next to mangrove forests, with kayaking and nature walks.

  • Al Maroona Beach: Roughly 1 hour 10 minutes from Doha, in the north-east, with golden sands and shallow water.

  • Fuwairit Beach: About a 1.5 to 2-hour drive in the north-east, known for kitesurfing and for turtle watching in nesting season.

  • Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid): In southern Qatar, around an hour and a half from Doha, where the desert meets the sea.

Malls and indoor days out

Qatar's malls double as family entertainment, with dining, cinemas and attractions alongside the shops. They're also a cool place to go when temperatures climb.

  • Place Vendôme (Lusail): A French-inspired mall, known for its luxury wing and fountain show.

  • Doha Festival City: One of Qatar's largest malls, with a strong family focus and attractions beyond shopping.

  • Villaggio Mall (Al Waab Street): Venetian-style interiors with an indoor canal and gondola rides.

  • Mall of Qatar: Next to Al Rayyan Stadium, with shops, dining, and cafés.

  • City Center Doha: A large mall near the Conference Centre area, with international and everyday brands.

  • Al Hazm Mall (Al Markhiya Street): An upscale, Italian-inspired mall with shops and cafés around a central promenade.

Cool spots for hot days: Old Mina Port, West Walk and Al Hazm Mall.

Where to Stay in Doha

  • The Pearl-Qatar: Marina, waterfront dining and a resort feel. Good for couples and families.

  • West Bay: Skyscrapers, business hotels and quick access to the Corniche.

  • Msheireb and Souq Waqif: Heritage, markets and restaurants. Best for the old-town atmosphere.

  • Lusail: The new city, close to the circuit and event venues.

Book early for UK school holidays and event weekends.

Desert and adventure

Desert safaris are the most popular excursion and fit easily into a stopover. Most include dune bashing, sandboarding and a camp stop, and late-afternoon departures avoid the heat. If you have more time, you can head further out to southern or north-west Qatar.

Desert activities

  • Dune bashing: A 4x4 ride over the dunes, usually the main part of a safari.

  • Sandboarding: Sliding down the dunes on a board, suitable for beginners.

  • Camel rides: A short ride at most desert camps, often at sunset.

  • Quad biking: Available on some tours, usually as an add-on.

  • Desert camp evening: Traditional-style camps with dinner, Arabic coffee and shisha, and often music or entertainment.

  • Stargazing and overnight camps: Away from the city lights, available as longer experiences.

Desert places to visit

  • Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid): In southern Qatar, around an hour and a half from Doha, where the dunes meet the sea. Most visits are a full day or a sunset trip.

  • Sealine area: About 40 minutes from Doha in the south, with dunes and the beach close together. A good option if you only have half a day.

  • Zekreet Peninsula: On Qatar's west coast, known for its limestone cliffs and the desert sculptures and film set nearby. It's a longer day trip.

  • Al Zubarah Archaeological Site: A UNESCO World Heritage site in the north-west, often combined with a drive across the desert.

Food and culinary experiences

doha traditional food sharing table

Qatari food is a good reason to eat out, and Doha's mix of Gulf, Levantine and South Asian cooking means there's something for every taste. Here's what to look for.

Qatari classics

  • Machboos: Spiced rice cooked with chicken, lamb or fish, often called the national dish.

  • Madrouba: A slow-cooked, creamy rice dish with chicken or meat, similar to a rich risotto.

  • Harees: Wheat slow-cooked with meat until soft, especially popular during Ramadan.

  • Thareed: A hearty stew poured over thin bread, a good pick for a cooler evening.

  • Balaleet: Sweet vermicelli with a fried egg on top, usually served at breakfast.

Familiar favourites with a Gulf twist

  • Shawarma: Carved chicken or lamb in a wrap. If you like a late-night kebab at home, you'll find a better version here.

  • Mixed grill: Skewers of grilled lamb, chicken and kofta, served with rice, bread and salad.

  • Mezze: Hummus, moutabal, tabbouleh, falafel and fresh bread to share, which works for a group.

  • Indian and Pakistani curries: Doha has a large South Asian community and some very good curry houses, a safe bet if you're missing a curry night.

  • Afternoon tea: Many of Doha's luxury hotels serve a traditional afternoon tea, often with Arabic pastries alongside the scones.

Sweets and drinks

  • Karak chai: Strong tea simmered with milk, sugar and cardamom, and the drink most likely to win over UK tea drinkers.

  • Arabic coffee (gahwa): Lightly spiced coffee served in small cups with dates.

  • Luqaimat: Crisp sweet dumplings drizzled with date syrup.

  • Umm Ali: A warm bread-and-cream pudding that is close to bread and butter pudding.

  • Kunafa: Shredded pastry with melted cheese and syrup, best eaten warm.

  • Fresh juices: Mango, pomegranate and lemon-and-mint are easy to find at cafés and stalls.

Where to eat: Souq Waqif has traditional restaurants and cafés, Msheireb has a mix of modern places, and The Pearl-Qatar and Katara have waterfront dining. Food tours and cooking experiences are an easy way to taste several dishes in one go.

Etiquette, Safety and What to Know

  • Dress: Dress modestly in public places such as souqs and malls, with shoulders and knees covered. Swimwear is fine at hotel pools and beaches.

  • Alcohol: It's served in licensed hotels and venues, not in public places.

  • Public behaviour: Avoid public displays of affection and be careful about photographing people without asking.

  • Ramadan: Eating, drinking and smoking in public during daylight hours is not allowed, though hotels usually have arrangements for visitors.

  • Medication: Some prescription medicines that are legal in the UK are controlled in Qatar. Carry prescriptions and check before you travel.

  • Official advice: Read the FCDO travel advice for Qatar, including local laws and safety, before you go.

When to Go

  • November to March: The most comfortable weather for sightseeing, beaches and the desert.

  • UK school holidays: October half-term, Christmas, February half-term and Easter are the busiest times for UK visitors. Book flights and hotels early.

  • Summer: Temperatures can pass 40°C, so plan indoor activities in the afternoon.

  • Ramadan: Expected from around 8 February 2027. Daytime opening hours change, but evenings are lively.

Business and events in Doha this season: extending your trip

Doha's autumn calendar is full: night racing, trade shows, food festivals and big concerts. Most events fill an evening or a few hours, which leaves the rest of the day free. That is the best time to see the city, so pick your event below and build an activity around it.

How to extend your stay around an event

  1. Pick your extra days. One day after the event is enough for the main sights. Two or three suit a couple or a family joining you.

  2. Adjust your hotel booking. Book the event nights near the venue, then move to a leisure area such as The Pearl-Qatar or Msheireb for the extra nights, or keep one hotel for simplicity.

  3. Change your return. If you're flying, check your ticket's change rules. If you're driving back through Abu Samra, plan the new date around border and holiday traffic.

  4. Check how long you can stay. Confirm the permitted length of stay for your situation with the Qatar Ministry of Interior or Hayya.qa before you extend by more than a few days.

  5. Plan the extra time. See the one-day itinerary below

Races, concerts, and most evening events leave your days free, and the same goes for the time after a day of sessions. A half-day city tour covers Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Corniche. A desert safari with the Inland Sea makes a full day out, and a sunset dhow cruise or a karak walk through the souq suits an easy evening. Browse Doha tours and experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

It lets passengers flying with Qatar Airways spend one to four nights in Doha during a connection, in a subsidised four- or five-star hotel. It's available when your transit in Doha is between 12 and 96 hours. Packages come in standard, premium, and luxury levels, which determine the hotel you can choose, and breakfast is included with some of them. You can also add airport transfers, tours and experiences when you book, so a connection becomes a short holiday without changing your onward flight.

Yes. The offer is for confirmed Qatar Airways and code-share ticket holders, so a ticket on another airline that connects through Doha won't qualify. To book, choose "Qatar Stopover" in the flight search panel and enter your real origin and final destination, not Doha. Your hotel check-in date must match the date you arrive in Doha. If you're not sure whether your ticket qualifies, check with Qatar Airways before you book.

Packages start from USD 14 per person, depending on the hotel, the length of stay, and the dates. Prices are dynamic, so the figure you see will change with availability, travel dates and the hotel level you choose. Check the live price when you search, and read the cancellation terms, as unused parts of a package may not be refundable. If your layover is shorter, some eligible fares also include a complimentary transit hotel, so ask Qatar Airways what applies to your ticket.

Yes. A late-afternoon safari fits into 24 hours, and many operators include a hotel pick-up and drop-off. A typical tour covers dune bashing, sandboarding and a stop at a desert camp, and takes around half a day. If you land early in the morning, rest first and book the safari for the afternoon, so you're not doing it straight off a long flight. Book a return transfer to the airport if your flight leaves the same night.

British citizens travelling on a full British passport don't need a visa to enter Qatar. Holders of other types of British passport may need to arrange a visa in advance. Requirements such as passport validity, health insurance and the permitted length of stay can change, so check the FCDO entry requirements for Qatar shortly before you travel.

About 7 hours direct from London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The return is usually slightly longer, and scheduled times can range from around 7 hours 15 minutes to over 8 hours. Many evening departures arrive in Doha in the early hours, so check your hotel's early check-in options. Qatar is 3 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 2 hours ahead during British Summer Time, so the time change is small.

Yes. From October to April, temperatures usually sit between 20 and 30°C, with mostly sunny days, and evenings can feel cooler, so pack a light layer. That's warm enough for hotel pools, beach clubs, and outdoor sightseeing without the summer heat, when temperatures can pass 40°C. It's also a shorter and simpler trip than most long-haul winter sun destinations.

Alcohol is available in licensed hotels and venues, but not in public places. Many visitors have a drink with dinner or at a hotel bar, and the best-known licensed venues are in hotels and resorts. Drinking in public or being drunk in public is not allowed. Check the rules on bringing alcohol into the country before you pack any.
